There have been many traditions and religious cultural issues and beliefs that have been affected thanks to the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake/Tsunami
The hardest hit area, Aceh, is the northern province of the island of Sumatra, part of Indonesia. Historically Aceh has been a conservative Islamic society and has had little Western influence in recent years due to armed conflict between the Indonesian Military and Acehnese Separatists. Some think that the tsunami which resulted from the 26th December 2004 Earthquake was a punishment from the divine gods for lay Muslims not following their religion strictly enough. Others think that Allah was angry that Acehnese Muslims were killing Jakarta-backed Muslims in ongoing conflict. The devastation from the tsunami caused a cease fire between these groups and negotiations concluded in a peace agreement, signed eight months later on 15th August 2005. The Acehnese needed peace in order to re-build their province.
