The earthquake and tsunami made a huge impact on South-East Asia that will be noticeable for many years to come. Everything and anything that got in the way of 8-12m high waves of the vicious tsunami was bound for the worst destroying hectares after hectares of land all through out Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.
Biodiversities/Ecosystems:
Severe damage has been recorded on ecosystems through out Thailand and the Maldives including mangroves, coral reefs, forest/jungles, coastal wetlands, sand dunes and rock formation, animal and plant biodiversity and groundwater. This caused a huge impact on Thailand because as you can see in this photo, the coast is rich and full of luscious forest/jungle and because those jungles are feed by fresh water the amount of salt water that was brought in by the waves was enormous and killed all the vegetation highlighted ion red on this photo as well as thousands of rice, mango and banana plantations in Sri Lanka that were almost entirely killed and will take years to recover. This also happened to the Maldives but in a different situation. All the coral reefs were destroyed from the tearing of the earthquake and wave currents during the tsunami, damaging and killing almost 45% of the coral reef biodiversities there.
Solid, Liquid, Chemical Waste and Water Pollution:
When the tsunami hit it completely destroyed sewerage in Sri Lanka therefore spreading solid waste like poop and soil, liquid waste like urine, any type of drink or oils and many more. That meant that any water you took.drunk was basically polluted which caused a massive health and safety harzard. They estimate that out of all the people that died in Sri Lanka 1000 of them died of sickness thanks to water poisoning.
