The Boxing Day Earthquake was caused by convergent plate movement between the Indian plate (Indo-Australian plate) and Burma Plate (Sunda Plate). The epicentre was located just of the west coast of North-West Sumatra in the
provence of Aceh.
This Earthquake had a magnitude of 9.1-9.3 and the focus point was 30km below sea level around 10 km off the Coast of Sumatra. The plates had been pushing against each other for thousands of years finally moving and realesing a huge amount of energy causing the earthquake and a huge megathrust shifting the Earth's plates causing a rapture more than 9 km long displacing the sea floor by 9m horizontally and vertically.
As the Indian Plate sinks deeper under the Burma plate increasing the temperature and pressure it starts making magma. The rising magma then intrudes the Earth's crust through the undersea volcanoes and that's how it formed.
