There were five main industries of the economy that were impacted tremendously buy the earthquake/tsunami; transport, fishing, tourism and electricity/communication.
Transport:
Transport in Indonesia was effected quite serious especially in the North-West region of Aceh because all the roads, paths and more. The major road that had runs along the west coast of Aceh was damaged thanks to dozens of bridges and roads collapsing, weathering or blocked by mud. This caused a bad impact because there was no access directly to Aceh by road unless you went through jungle which made it extremely hard for Relief Agencies to get there.
Fishing:
The impact on fishing communities (especially in coastal areas) was huge with high losses in income and fishing gear. It's stated that 66% of fishing feet and infrastructure in coastal regions have been destroyed by tsunami's or wave surges In Sri-Lanka, fisheries are the major economic activity and it provides jobs for about 250,000 people.
Tourism:
Tourism is a major part of the economy for all the countries effected, Thailand in particular. Around the tsunami tourism had dramatically plummeted for Thailand but is now back on a steady recovery. In 2002 it was contributing to more than 6% of the GPD, but after the tsunami the GPD for tourism declined by 1.3%. Between 2004-2005, the tourism economy went from $21 million to $17 million dollars in Phuket having a drastic effect on the country.
Electricity/Communication:
In coastal areas effected by the natural disaster, electricity was cut off because of the demolishing of all power lines and type of electrical communication. Telephone services were disrupted because telephone lines and poles were washed away. This made all attempts of communication almost impossible because no one could get in touch with anyone including yet again Relief Agencies.
