The reason for most earthquake occurrences is the movement of tectonic plates -
The land that we live on is actually made up of parts of the Earth's crust. The surface of the world is broken up into many pieces, just like an eggshell, and we refer to these pieces as tectonic plates. The tectonic plates are supposedly 'floating' on the second layer of the Earth, the Mantle. The Mantle is a mixture of molten rock that we call magma. Below the Mantle is the Outer Core, which is basically liquid iron, and the Inner Core is below that. As it has been for millions of years, the tectonic plates are constantly moving. This is caused by convection currents which look like this -
These currents are movements of magma that cool when they get to the surface and heat up when the reach the bottom, sending them in this circuit. These circuits are what create the movement of tectonic plates.
The are two types of crust -
Continental crust - which is crust that has land on it, and it is thick.
Oceanic crust - which is crust that the ocean lies on, and it is thin.
